Lost Coast Trail

So over the weekend I did the lost coast trail.

Managed the 28 mile south section on day one and finished up the 28 mile north section on day 2. Caitlin graciously shuttled for me (she got to stay in a very nice bed and breakfast).

The roads were closed from Leggett to highway 1 due to the recent storms, we found another route west a bit further south. But when we got to the highway 1 turn off, it was closed as well. Road crew said we’d be fine to drive through. The road to Usal beach was pretty rough but the Subaru managed.

Running late from the roads and off I go into the overgrown southern section. The pampas grass would wrap around my bare legs and then the sharp edges would slice my skin.

Something like 8,000 feet of elevation gain on the first day.

With sun setting at 5:30, I got to the top of Chemise mountain and hiked the last 2 hours in the dark.

Up at 4:30 am I dropped 2,500 feet into the sleeping Shelter Cove.

Got through the impassable high tide zone by 10 am. Had to wait about an hour before I could go through the second one.

Caitlin met me at the Mattole beach trailhead to bring me back to the Ferndale bed and breakfast where dinner awaited. Got very car sick. Some things never change I guess.
